BROADBAND
How to compare broadband beyond the headline price
A practical guide to total cost, speed, contract length, setup charges, annual increases and household suitability.
The lowest advertised monthly price does not always identify the broadband package that will cost least or work best for a household. A fair comparison should consider full contract cost, expected usage, availability and the terms applying after any introductory period.
Calculate the total contract cost
Multiply the monthly charge by the contract length, then add setup, activation, delivery and equipment charges. Include any clearly stated in-contract price change where it can be calculated.
- Monthly charges across the minimum term
- Setup, activation and delivery charges
- Router or equipment costs
- Known in-contract price changes
- Credits or rewards and their conditions
Match speed to household usage
Several simultaneous video calls, streams, games or large downloads may require more capacity than general browsing and email. Extra speed is not automatically better value when the additional capacity is rarely used.
Check availability at the exact address
Technology and estimated speeds can vary between nearby properties. Use an address-level check and note whether displayed speeds are estimates, ranges or minimum guarantees.
Review contract and exit terms
